So, I wake up at 4:45am and hear water sounds, splashing or something like it. I panic and run around looking. Everything seems okay, must be freezing rain. I notice it’s snowed a bit since going to sleep, great, the line is probably frozen again and it’s supposed to rain a lot this weekend while I’m gone?..
I lay back down and keep hearing odd little sounds here and there. Strange creeks that keep me awake.
I finally fall back to sleep when the doorbell rings at 6am.
I think, great, Bob IS swinging by to pick up those CD’s for Todd.
I go to the door. It’s the police. 3 cruisers out front, 2 officers at the door. Oh dear god now what?
The officer explains that someone tried to break into the neighbor’s garage and the tracks led to my house, where the screen to my garage window was on the ground and then the tracks go off to the next house. Apparently someone or group of someones is/are hitting garages for quick cash. 9 houses were broken into last night in the area.
I open the garage and discover??nothing! They didn’t make it in. The outside window pane is broken and the screen is indeed on the ground, but they gave up since it wasn’t an easy entry and moved on to the next house.
While filling out the police report I hear that they hit a bunch of houses in down the street. Just stopping at each one, if they can’t get in quick they move on.
Nice.
And of course, I never thought to alarm the garage windows.
The officer takes pictures and completes the report. I tell him we’ll be out of town for the next few days and he tells me about a watch program they have. I just have to call the sheriff’s office and they’ll have an officer stop by and walk the house and check everything every shift. That’s cool.
Naturally I was a bit keyed up and didn’t sleep well afterwards. Then the alarm went off. Then my cell phone rang, State Farm calling about the flooding damage report. I guess I’m not going to get good sleep today. I hope the snow and ice hasn’t delayed air traffic today?..
