Convergence

The more I read the more hopeful I become for the future. I see something coming, something wonderful. Or, more accurately, many something’s that are revolutionary and whose impacts will be felt in our society for many decades to come. I read allot. I have about 12 magazine subscriptions, some of which are weekly and visit a dozen or so web sites daily. My interests are across the spectrum of human knowledge. From this I see a convergence coming, a point when incredible discoveries in scattered fields come together and aid one another. The convergence creates a building upon each other of the collected knowledge and the rate of advancement increases exponentially. In many ways the beginnings of this can be seen already. Some fields are beginning to converge already. As I read about the advances, plans, prototypes, theories and inventions across these many fields of human endeavor I see how the discoveries in one could aid the efforts in another. And when the breakthroughs happen they will enable a domino effect of breakthroughs that will advance faster than anything we’ve yet known as a species. Will we survive it? Undoubtedly. But we will be greatly changed by it, and not all of us may survive it. I see many risks when the convergence happens, and these risks are felt and voiced in part by the vocal fringes of our society and are echoed back to us in movies like “28 days later”. The risks are there, and in reality probably far worse than anything we’ve yet imagined. But likewise are the benefits. Humanity is on the cusp of truly inheriting the stars and controlling our own destiny in ways heretofore though of only in dreams. I shall try and post more musings here as well as interesting articles I find that illustrate what better what I mean.
