Amazing. Get this: after the great flood a few years back the city of Houston decided that they needed to upgrade their entire storm sewer system, in case the once in 100 year floods started becoming more regular or just to be prepared for the next flood in 100 years. So they have been ripping out all the storm sewers throughout the entire city and replacing them. Obviously this makes quite a mess and will take many many years. Next they apparently decided to put in a light rail system, which most people seem to think is too little too late. So they’ve been busy ripping up existing streets, expanding streets etc. to put in the light rail system. This has been going on for a few years and will continue for many more. But, since Houston must exist in a strange land where there is a shortage of workers, they have plenty of money for normal street repairs but no people, since they are all working on one of the other two projects. So, no street repair at all has gone on for the past few years. It’s like driving in a 3rd world country. It’s worse than Michigan. I was quite amazed that a city where it hardly ever goes below freezing could have such horrible streets. Pot holes that could eat entire SUV’s. Really specced. Now the people are getting fed up with it and starting to moan to the politicians. Apparently this actually works in a state where everyone is armed. That they haven’t started shooting construction workers wholesale yet is also amazing to me.
