The Ventilation Project

A lot of people modify their personal computers to better dissipate heat. My problem lies with the room the computers are in. I have 9 computers in my home office and it can get pretty warm. I have a dedicated air conditioner for this room that can run all winter long but it’s loud and gets expensive and typically will run almost all day long to keep the temperature around 75/76. I’ve taken several steps to remove heat from the room over the past 2 and half years. Last fall I installed a system to vent hot air from the ceiling of the office into the garage. This year I replace the main monitors, 21″ Trinitrons with brand new LCD panels and changed the 65 watt can lights with fluorescents at a warm almost incandescent color. And now, the crowing achievement in computer room ventilation is almost complete. This past weekend, with the aid of my uncle, we have modified the initial venting system to suck hot air directly from the PC’s! Pipe from an in-wall whole house vacuum system forms the backbone of the system. PVC fittings and flexible vacuum hose is used to connect to each PC. The PVC fittings are glued to the cases with Gorilla Glue. All pipe runs lead into the main fan unit which pumps the air into the garage during the winter and outside during the summer. To help with negative pressure and ad a bit more cooling a cold air inlet was installed using an in-line fan to pump cool air into the room. At this point the room could also be used as a nice in home meth lab! The next, and final, step will be to relocate the 9 APC 1000 UPS’s into the unfinished area of the basement.
