The glorious world of the iPhone and the “internet of things” in my life….so far.

I’ve jumped on the bandwagon of being able to control and monitor the things in my life with my iPhone.  This is beyond simple data entry. All of these things are direct connections to my iPhone. Some, like sleep and weight are collected automatically after the fact, but most are real time.

These are the things I can monitor on my iPhone:

  • Baby monitor (video)
  • Car data – GoPoint BT1 connects to car’s OBD-II data port and sends data in real time to iPhone
  • Pulse rate – using iPhone’s camera and flash. Amazing.
  • Whole house electrical usage – TED5000 hooked up to both panels. Real time power usage!
  • Calories burned – BodyMedia arm band
  • Router – Netgear
  • Sleep  – BodyMedia
  • Weight from scale – Withings
  • Radar Detector – Escort 9500xi via Escort Live. Monitor user submitted warnings and change detector settings. Also shows posted speed limit for current road.

And these items I can control with my iPhone:

  • PCs – remote desktop
  • Cable Box – TW, can change channels, view DVR schedules and stream TV
  • AppleTV
  • TV – Panasonic
  • BluRay Player – Panasonic
  • Receiver – Pioneer
  • Both thermostats – Nest rocks!
  • Both garage doors – open and close, monitor state, and receive notifications when they open, and stay open for x amount of time. Arduino based, see www.mydooropener.com
  • 2 video cameras – pan & tilt and 2 way audio
  • Multiple RC cars –  tank with video, Porche, and Sphero
  • Both Xbox 360’s
  • My Pebble watch

Within the next 6 months I should be able to control some interior house lighting with Ube and the door locks.

If we get a pool in the spring, I’ve already found iPhone monitoring and control options for the chlorine and ph levels!

Wish List:

  • Refrigerator with ability to notify me about food items we are either out of or low on. Same with pantry.
  • Actual remote control driving ability for the car.
