Electronics’ distortion field

That’s what I find myself in today. An EDF. It began on my way into work. My increasingly long commute as I’ve yet to find a good way to get from Powell to I-270 at 7:20 am. At least it’s fantastic audio book time.

Last night, knowing I only had 11 minutes left on the book I was listening too, I purchased the next book in the series from Audible and downloaded it in the Audible App. I was all set for my commute! This is where the EDF first kicks in. My book ends while I’m sitting in traffic on 315. I select my library, on device, and ….. It’s not there.

“That’s odd”, I say to myself.

I switch to cloud view and there is the book. I press it to download it again. But instead of downloading it shows me a mostly empty screen and says that in order to listen to something I should go to my library and select something. Great. I can’t download it.

I kill off all running apps and reboot the iPhone.

Same thing.

I delete the app and re-install it. This time it lets me download it. Of course, I had to go through all the login stuff again including 2 factor authentication (which EVERYONE should be using on EVERYTHING that supports it) while in stop and go traffic.
Now that it’s downloaded I hit play and it plays through the iPhone speaker instead of the car speakers.

“Right…” I say, the reboot dropped the Bluetooth™ connection and of course it didn’t re-establish it, because that’s what I wanted to happen. Every time I happen to be walking near my car and it’s already running, THEN 100% of the time it re-establishes the connection AND starts playing my audio-book even if I’m not in the car. But when I’m in the car and want that to happen? Hell no!

Fine. I go through the car menus to re-connect my phone and hit play.
Nothing. Silence.

Of course… the car audio system shut itself off because…. EDF!

Turn that back on and all is well, at long last. I wasn’t aware that the EDF was just beginning…
I get to work and unpack my stuff. Set up my laptop, get out my Surface Pro 4 and turn it on and go get some coffee. When I come back my Surface Pro 4 is not doing much. The screen is frozen and it won’t do anything other than let me hit ctrl-alt-del to get to the lock screen. Odd. I sign out and back in. But it’s running VERY slow. Takes over 5 minutes to accomplish that simple act and usually it’s instant. Still sluggish and un-responsive I opt to shut down and restart. Shutdown goes great. Starting back up…. It seems to ignore the button presses. Finally it powers up, I log in and everything is good.

I sigh. Maybe the EDF is finally done with me?

Nope.

One of the endless alerts I get on my iPhone goes off and it’s super loud. Yikes, I think. I grab it and turn the volume down. It wasn’t set that loud to begin with, only 3 bars, but I drop it to 1 bar and set it down.

A few minutes later it goes off again, if anything louder than before! I double check and sure enough it’s at 1 bar. This should not be anywhere near this loud. So apparently the iPhone is now ignoring my volume settings, that’s nice. I end up putting it in vibration only mode.
Everything seems to be working okay-ish at the moment, but it’s still early morning with plenty of time for the EDF to screw up more stuff around me
